Clean or Dirty dishwasher magnet: Quick DIY project

Wouldn’t it be great if you could know if the dishes in the dishwasher are clean or dirty without every having to open it to see?? Well, stay tuned – because I’m going to share a quick and easy DIY project on how to make a reversible dishwasher magnet that will help you do just that!

Oh my! I am loving this DIY project and I hope you will too! It’s easy to create and oh so practical! 2 of my most favorite things in a DIY project!

So, to get started, you’ll need to gather your supplies. Here’s what I used to create my magnet:

DIY Dishwasher Magnet supplies:

  • Round simple wood shape
  • Black, white and Sage chalkpaste colors
  • Clean & Dirty silkscreen transfer
  • Simple Frames transfer
  • Squeegee
  • Adhesive Magnet
  • Surface wax
  • Paintbrush

How to make your dishwasher magnet:

First, we’ll want to paint our white-washed wood simple circle shape. I’ve chosen to use the black chalkpaste as my paint. To turn your chalkpaste into paint, simply place a small amount of paste in a color tray and squirt a bit of water to thin out the paste. Stir it with your paintbrush, until it’s nice and smooth and there are no clumps remaining. You want it to be an acrylic-paint-like consistency, so add more water as necessary.

Now we’re ready to paint the surface of the simple wood shape. One of the great things about painting with chalkpaste is that it dries very quickly and there’s no smell!

Now, we’ll want to let the paint dry. You can hurry things along by using a quick dry tool, or a hairdryer, if you want. Once it is completely dry, lightly apply some surface wax to painted wood shape and then buff it dry.

Now comes the fun part….

Cut the round frame design form the Simple Frame transfer sheet, following the provided cut lines. Fuzz the back of the transfer, using a terrycloth towel to soften the adhesive, and lay onto wood shape, sticky-side down. Smooth out any air bubbles under the design using your fingers.

Now we can begin chalking! Spread the Sage chalkpaste over the screen areas of the frame transfer with the squeegee, until it is completely covered. Sgueegee off any excess paste. Then, before the paste dries, slowly peel the transfer from the wood shape to reveal the design. (Using the wax will help lift the transfer easily.)

Once the Sage paste dries, apply another quick layer of surface wax.

Then use the Clean & Dirty transfer to add lines to the middle of the circle.

Once the lines are dry, use your white chalkpaste to apply the words Clean, then Dirty above and below the lines (making sure that each word is dry before moving on to the next.)

Let the design dry and add an adhesive magnet to the back. Now it’s ready to go on your dishwasher!
